One of the newest coffee companies in DC, Blue Bottle Coffee Company, has already built a reputation for high quality single origin roasts. But is Blue Bottle worth the money?

My latest trip to the store was similar to the prior times I have been, albeit a little more slow. I ordered a cold brew, and in the past I had a “New Orleans” iced coffee.  The latter is a chicory enhanced cold brew with whole milk and sugar. When I ordered it I was not a fan, but I know this may suit the palates of people who like sweeter coffee drinks.

“New Orleans” Cold Brew

Rating: 8/10

Verdict: Just not for me, but not bad. No acidic feel, and no overly earthy tastes. I found it overly sweet, but that may be the audience they are going for.

Blue Bottle Cold Brew

Rating: 10/10

Verdict: Totally worth it. The coffee has the perfect balance of more pleasant tangy notes and pure coffee flavor. While I’ve often had cold brew that tasted bitter from overextraction, Blue Bottle clearly has carefully managed both the size and time elements to create a very strong cold brew offering. While $4.75 for a medium coffee is quite expensive, it ranks as average for a third wave store.  I would feel like every time at Blue Bottle would get this experience.

*Addendum: The customer service here is killer, and the staff is very deaf friendly. I’ve ordered in ASL here, and they are very knowledgeable about everything on the menu. Rarely can one say that the staff would really drive someone to shop here, but I feel comfortable saying that about the staff at Blue Bottle.
